One morning, a few months ago, I opened my closet and mumbled the same thing most women have said at one point in their lives: "I have nothing to wear." The thing was, I wasn't being melodramatic - I was staring at a closet full of printed dresses and one-pieces, all of which had been exhausted and with limited options for mixing and matching. As a condo dweller in a big city, it just isn't spatially convenient to have a closet full of dresses - and that's hard for me to admit, since you guys know that I love my dresses.
Lately I've been allowing trying to build up my separates and have noticed a huge improvement in the amount of wear that I'm able to get from my clothes. Take these Aritzia white culottes for example; you guys have seen them worn all summer with little tanks and crop tops, but now I'm getting so much more wear out of them by pairing them with heavy knits and booties. This sweater is a newer addition to my tiny wardrobe and already it's been working overtime, being paired with trousers, skirts and tights.
Will I give up my love for dresses and all things pattered? Probably not - I really love wearing dresses. Now though, I'm going to try to be a bit more selective on which dresses make the cut and put a larger focus on separates. My tiny condo-sized closet will thank me.

What do you guys think? Are you in the same boat as I am with your closet space, or are you able to have as many dresses as you want? How do you mix and match your wardrobe? Let me know!
Totally in the same boat as you. Separates are so key. Love the look!ReplyDelete
We both love dresses so much! Definitely separates make a more rounded-out closet!Delete
I'm definitely on the same page where I like separates that I can wear over and over again. My closet space is so limited, that I need to be selective about whatever I buy. I love the soft color palette of this outfit, by the way. Those culottes are so cute!ReplyDelete

Awe thank you Helen, I'm so glad that you like the outfit! I know what you mean - small closets mean that you need to be SO selective with your clothing. I am definitely learning that separates are the way to go!Delete
Ah-dorable! I feel you for the small closet issue and I have nothing to wear. Does the struggle ever end?ReplyDelete
NEVER! At least not in Toronto condos, that's for sure!Delete
Oh my goodness, you have no idea! I am a dress fiend, but my closet is crying right now. I already have a bunch of things doubled up on hangers! Such a good read :)ReplyDelete
HAHA my life too - the double hanger is key!Delete
Love this look, Joelle! I'm the same — small closets just won't fit everything! Thought about becoming a minimalist, but I just decided to get more "mix and match" options instead. :)ReplyDelete

HAHA I seriously had the same thought process! I always try to become a minimalist, but my inner unicorn always gets in the way. Mix and match will have to do for now!Delete
This is such a beautiful soft look for Fall, so many deep reds and moody tones around and this white and pink combo is so beautiful. That sweater looks so cozy too!ReplyDelete
Awe thank you so much Ellie! I'm so glad that you like the pastels for Fall.Delete
I TOTALLY get it! I am in the same situation as you, tiny condo closet so I have also started being more selective about items I buy so I have more options to mix and match. love love this outfit you're wearing, makes me want to go buy all the pinks and pastels :)ReplyDelete
ps. it's hard to imagine you before platinum blonde hair! love it
